ANALYSIS:
Lane, a businessman, founded the Vermont Grassroots Party in 1992. Lane is more ideologically libertarian than liberal -- opposing gun control and calling for less government, school vouchers, equal rights, universal health care, legalizing prostitution, marijuana and hemp. A businessman, he also strongly supports repeal of all forfeiture laws. The GRP's 1996 Presidential nominee -- openly gay Vietnam War veteran and medical marijuana activist Dennis Peron of California -- was on the ballot in two states and captured 5,400 votes. As Lane secured ballot status only in Vermont, he is not expected to significantly improve upon the party's 1996 totals.
