PRESIDENCY 2000:

GEORGE W. BUSH of Texas
Republican Party Presidential Nominee
GEORGE W. BUSH BIOGRAPHICAL FACTS:
POLITICAL: Governor of Texas, 1995-present [Elected 1994 (54%); re-elected 1998 (69%)].
Senior Advisor, George Bush for President Campaign, 1988. Unsuccessful GOP nominee for Congress, 1978 (47%).
PROFESSIONAL: Managing General Partner, Texas Rangers pro baseball team, 1989-94. Founder & CEO, Bush Exploration Oil & Gas Company, 1975-86. Pilot, Texas Air National Guard, 1968-73.
EDUCATION: B.A., Yale University, 1968. M.B.A., Harvard Business School, 1975.
PERSONAL: Born July 6, 1946 in New Haven, Connecticut. Married to Laura Welch Bush. Two children. Methodist. Grandson of the late US Senator Prescott Bush (R-CT). Son of former President George H.W. Bush (R-TX). Brother of Governor Jeb Bush (R-FL).
RICHARD B. "DICK" CHENEY of Wyoming
Republican Party Vice Presidential NomineeCheney, 59, is a respected Washington insider who served as a prominent member of President Bush's Cabinet. Cheney began his service in government in 1969, holding a series of posts in the Nixon Administration. In November 1975, he became White House Chief of Staff under President Ford -- a post he held until Ford left office in January 1977. After returning to his homestate of Wyoming, Cheney was elected to an open seat in Congress in 1978 (and re-elected five subsequent times).
While in Congress, he rose in the GOP leadership ranks to the position of House Minority Whip (1988-89). During his years in Congress, he built a reputation as a bright, genial member who built friendships with political opponents and sounded rather centrist themes -- while compiling a very conservative voting record. Cheney resigned his seat in Congress to serve as the US Defense Secretary in the Bush Administration. In that capacity, he directed the US invasion of Panama and the subsequent Operation Desert Storm military action against Iraq. Since leaving government in 1989, Cheney went to work in the private sector. Most recently, he served as Chairman/CEO of Halliburton Co., a Texas oil company. Cheney, a Methodist, is married and has two adult daughters. His wife, Lynne, served as Chair of the National Endowment for the Humanities during the Bush Administration and is an outspoken conservative. Cheney's daughter Mary, 31, was also propelled into the national spotlight during the GOP convention when it was frequently reported that she is openly lesbian -- and her father seems to have moderated his formerly unsupportive views on gay rights issues. Cheney's history of health problems (three mild heart attacks and heart bypass surgery) is likely to be an issue during the campaign. As for charisma, Cheney is not a charismatic campaigner -- but he did perform very well in the lone Vice Presidential debate.

THE GEORGE W. BUSH LIBRARY:
A Charge to Keep by George W. Bush (1999). In this rather dull (and ghost-written) memoir, Bush tells us who he is and what he believes. The Governor Bush portrayed in this campaign book has his father's energy, his mother's tart and honest wit, and his own irreverence and impatience. He also addresses the questions that may well decide who becomes the next president: crime, education, abortion, tax and tort reform, and the continuing battle for "the soul" of the Republican Party. Much of this book seems to actually be a cut-and-paste job from many of Bush's better political speeches. Follow the above link to read more reviews about this book. List: $23.00. Your Price: $18.40 (You Save 20%)!
First Son: George W. Bush and the Bush Family Dynasty by Bill Minutaglio (1999). The author -- a veteran Texas newspaper reporter at the Dallas Morning News -- interviewed more than 300 sources for this book. First Son is the first serious biography of Bush to reach store shelves. Among those he spoke with were George W’s younger brother Jeb, his uncles, cousins, friends and acquaintances from each phase of Bush’s life. Bush himself, however, did not cooperate in the writing of this book. Minutaglio presents a largely unflattering look at Bush: no intellectual interests, youthful drinking and womanizing, limited work experiences, wealthy family connections, questionable business deals, no strong political views -- but generally a nice man. Clinton biographer David Maraniss praised the book as "thorough, colorful, revealing, and compelling." All reviews to date have praised the author's lively writing style. However, if you are looking for a pro-Bush biography, you'll just have to keep waiting (although it is likely at least one will be published at some point during the campaign). List: $25.00. Your Price: $20.00 (You Save 20%)!
George Bush: The Life of a Lone Star Yankee by Herbert S. Parmet (1997). This highly praised book gives a good insight into the Bush family. President Bush always vowed that he will never write an autobiography. Instead, Bush fully and candidly cooperated with the author in the preparation of this book. The cooperation made for a very balanced -- the good and the bad -- and well researched book. A truly insightful look at President Bush's life as a Yale student, youngest combat pilot in Navy history, millionaire Texas oil man, Congressman, twice losing candidate for US Senate, Republican National Chairman, Ambassador to the United Nations, Ambassador to China, C.I.A. Director, candidate for President in 1980, Vice President, President, and unsuccessful candidate for re-election in 1992. A great book, very well received by the critics. List: $32.50. Your Price: $22.75 (You Save 30%)!
Barbara Bush: A Memoir by Barbara Bush (1994). Since the book about his father is listed here, its only fair that we also list the book written by George W's mother, too. Filled with warm, funny and touching anecdotes, popular former First Lady Barbara Bush's memoirs reveal the innermost heart of a down-to-earth woman who stood fiercely by her husband, family and nation. She gives readers a very private look at a life she lived in the public eye for more than 25 years. Drawing upon excerpts from the diary she has compiled for more than 30 years, Mrs. Bush takes us behind the scenes of the Persian Gulf war and the end of the Cold War, and introduces us to the world leaders and their spouses with whom she has developed friendships over the years. She also talks about both the her struggle to overcome Graves Disease, the disappointment of the 1992 Presidential campaign, the joys of rediscovering private life, and tells us why she threw so much of her energy and compassion behind the important cause of making America more literate. Also includes a special collection of photos. List: $6.99. Your Price: $5.59 (You Save 20%)! (Paperback.)
